Many diets today claim that carbohydrates should be cut out totally, but this is simply foolish! Unless you have celiac disease or other intolerance, you don't want to miss out on the health benefits of healthy carbohydrates such as whole grains. Great Harvest in Austin would like to offer a few good reasons to include whole grains in your diet.

Fiber

Whole grains are an exceptional source of fiber, which is vital for good digestive function. Not only that, but fiber carries a number of other health benefits; it helps lower bad cholesterol, controls blood sugar, and has been linked with reduced risk of colon cancer.

Heart health

Whole grains have been shown to be extremely beneficial to cardiovascular health. People that eat whole grains rather than refined grains have been shown to have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and overall lower risk of heart disease. They have also been shown to provide stable blood sugar levels due to their low glycemic index, which means a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

They keep you full

As mentioned, whole grains have a low glycemic index. This means they release energy slowly throughout the day meaning you feel full for longer, meaning none of the spikes and slumps in energy associated with refined carbohydrates (particularly refined sugars). Feeling fuller for longer also means you won't be as tempted to snack between meals, so it can help you stick to a healthier diet.

These are by no means all the benefits; depending on the particular grain you may also be getting rich doses of vitamins C, A and D, calcium, iron, and other minerals.
