Real Food. Real People.

Thanksgiving is all about delicious food and good company. However, for all of this to happen, there needs to be a dinner table. It is where your family and friends will gather round to celebrate, eat, and give thanks.

Needless to say, the table needs to be set perfectly to provide the right ambiance and backdrop to the dinner, which is why Great Harvest in Austin will give you a few tips on how to do it!

How to Set the Perfect Thanksgiving Dinner Table

Determine the Basics

Before you begin getting the fancy china out, there are some things you need to figure out first:
- Make a guest list and ensure that those invited RSVP as soon as possible.
- Get a big enough table (or tables) that will be able to fit all of your guests comfortably.
- If you feel like it's necessary, arrange a seating chart for your guests.
- Choose colors and a theme for your dinner table and its decor.

Dress for the Occasion

Now you need to start dressing up the table for the big dinner! Think about the theme you have in mind and pick patterns and designs that go with it.
- Use a tablecloth to decorate, cover and protect the table. You can also place a runner on top (or on its own) to give the table more structure and visual appeal.
- Lay an individual placemat for each guest to protect the other linens against spills.
- Provide a cloth napkin for each seat and make it into an interesting shape (a swan or rose, for example) to add style to the table.

Set the Places

This is where it can get a bit tricky, since this will depend on the food you'll be serving for Thanksgiving. However, a place setting for a dinner party usually has these elements:
- Layer the plates in terms of size: the base plate on the bottom, the main course plate and then the starter plate on top. The bread plate should go in the top left corner.
- As for the cutlery, place the forks in the order they'll be used on the left side (the first one farthest away from the plate and so on). The spoons and knives should also follow this logic on the right side of the place setting, with the spoons on the outer edge.
- Glasses should be in the top right corner, with the water glass to the left and the wine glass to the right.

Make Nice

Time to make the table look good! But first, there are a few things you should keep in mind. For example, don't obstruct conversation by putting tall vases, flowers or decorations between guests. Likewise, remember to leave room for the food and don't overcrowd the table with decor.
- Get a centerpiece for your table that ties in with the decorations and the overall Thanksgiving ambiance. This should be the main focus on your table so keep it fancy!
- You can also place some accent pieces around the table. Anything from small pumpkins to fall candles can make your table even merrier.
